What is the purpose of this trial?
The purpose of this study is to help us understand how the brain can use naturally occurring substances other than glucose for fuel. The results of this completed study may potentially influence future treatment procedures for assisting people safely through alcohol detoxification. In order to look at this, we are using an MRS/MRI to measure certain fluid levels in the brain. We are seeking two different population groups:
Treatment Seeking Group
We are offering 30-day free inpatient treatment, in New Haven, to eligible participants who are currently abusing alcohol and would like to stop. Participation involves several MRS scans, while enrolled in our inpatient program for about 30 days. In addition to free treatment, participants may be compensated up to $700 for full completion of the study.
We are looking for participants who have undergone treatment for alcohol related dependency, but who have now been sober 6 months or more. Participation involves up to 3 outpatient visits at our office in New Haven. Compensation of up to $380 is given for full completion of the study.
Ages: 21 - 55 years
